It is a disturbing fact that
one in three people can
expect to have a panic attack at some stage. It is a condition that
affects all age groups and it is common for healthy, young adults to
have occasional panic attacks.
The definition of a panic attack
is as follows:
'A
disorder characterized by sudden attacks
of fear and panic. The episodes may resemble a heart attack
(although in practice, they have nothing to do with this condition).
They may strike at any time and occur without a known reason but
more frequently are triggered by specific events or thoughts, such
as encountering crowds, being exposed to heights or the anticipation
of a negative event. The attacks may be so terrifying that some
people associate their attacks with the place they occurred and will
refuse to go there again.
Symptoms of panic
attacks may include tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), chest pressure or
pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, tingling, and anxiety.
Hyperventilation, agitation, and withdrawal are common results.'
Panic attacks are
also associated with
other disorders
including agoraphobia, claustrophobia, and generalised anxiety
disorder.
The Hypnostyx
'Panic Attack' programme is based on our highly successful face-to
face therapy and includes the following:
Calming
Breathing Exercises :
Most
people tend to breathe in a slightly abnormal
way, they tend to hold in their stomachs, make little use of
their diaphragm, and breathe using the muscles of their upper chest,
neck and shoulders. This is not the most effective way to get the
needed oxygen to our brain and muscles and in some cases this
breathing method can simulate symptoms observed in a panic attack.
Progressive Muscle
Relaxation: Is especially useful for people who's
anxiety is strongly associated with muscle tension. This is
what often leads people to say 'I'm uptight' or 'tense'. You
may experience chronic tightness in your shoulders and neck, which
can be effectively relieved by practising Progressive Muscle
Relaxation. Other symptoms that respond well include tension
headaches, backaches, tightness in the jaw, tightness around the
eyes, muscle spasms, high blood pressure and insomnia.
Deep
Relaxation: The cause of most panic attacks is a
build-up of anxiety and tension. There is no time relation to
this, anxiety can slowly build over a period of time or flood the
brain in an instant. The Deep Relaxation session included in
this programme not only instantly relaxes but also teaches
techniques to recognise and neutralise anxiety before it can erupt
into a full blown panic attack.
Hypnotherapy
Session: Uses suggestion and
positive messages to educate the subconscious mind in recognising
and dealing with anxiety and stress in a proactive, positive way.
With this session you will never again feel out of control. |
